I like Ronald Tubid.
I think he should be in Maharlika... because most of his contemporaries are there. But for some reason… mainly due to his awesomeness… the former second round pick of the 2003 PBA Draft is still in the league - putting up respectable numbers.
If you like what The Fearless did when he was still playing for Ginebra or San Miguel… then you’re cringing at his current situation. Tubid is currently playing for a down and out team. It's not his fault... blame the SMB peeps... but instead of claiming another title with the Beermen, he is stuck in Columbian Dyip.
Now unlike the SMC and MVP teams, it’s difficult for a franchise to have the best players with a shoestring budget. For this reason is why teams like Shell, Barako Bull (the Red Bull one), and Air21 (the FedEx one) ceded their players… and eventually their slots because their international partners can't comprehend the need of a PBA franchise.
If Phoenix is Columbian’s sister squad, then it’s probably best for them to combine their forces. After all, both teams are never in the thick of things. The Fuel Masters are better than Team Dyip but despite the acquisitions of Matthew Wright and Calvin Abueva, they are still a couple of players short in order to score consistent victories over San Miguel, Ginebra, and Magnolia. But then Phoenix and Columbian can still keep the two teams apart… if they add another financial contributor to the mix.
Back then, rumors swirled of a possible SM entry. Tanduay is said to be ready to re-confront their SMC demons (basically the reason why they disbanded). And hey… perhaps one clothing line like Bench could raise Crispa from whatever they are right now because yeah, nothing screams awesomeness than retro franchises.
Just imagine - give the main team the first and third conferences but in the second conference, just have the second owner have his product colors.
A financially-souped franchise would cringe at the sight of SMC and MVP hoarding the talents. Blackwater is slowly creating a powerhouse squad that stretches its sights towards the ABL. I know they missed out on a potential franchise but if they’re thinking about it… this means they have a viable resource.
*cough* Westports *cough*
In some ways, Columbian could be in line of a talent facelift with either Bobby Ray Parks or CJ Perez ready for the picking in the 2018 PBA Draft. If Tubid is tired of getting their asses handed to them, then the two first round picks could rectify that situation (they also own SMB's first round choice).
With that said, the only thing I hope is that hopefully… Team Dyip won’t screw around with their picks. I know they gained flak for trading away Troy Rosario and most recently… Christian Standhardinger but they also dismantled their franchise when the team had KG Canaleta, Aldrech Ramos, LA Revilla, and Mike DiGregorio, they picked Manny Pacquiao in the first round, and selected Russel Escoto as their Special Draft Pick over the likes of Mac Belo, RR Pogoy, Matthew Wright, Jio Jalalon, and Kevin Ferrer.
Sure, opportunities knock.
But they also need to make sure that they properly select said opportunity.
